Early Settlers - Social Studies

Dear 4A, For today's lesson, lets us focus on some information on early settlers. Click this link to find out more about who our pioneers are and the contributions they have made to Singapore's growth. Let's recall information on Raffles and his associate Farquar Post your thoughts on the following questions.... 1) Name one early settler you have read about. 2) Why do you think his/her contribution is very important to Singapore.

    2)He sold daily needs like cloth, medicine and provisions.He also supplied ships with bread and vegetables.He also owned many things like a bakery,an accessories shop and a large gambling plantation.I think his contribution is very important to Singapore because he supplied many things to the early settlers to help them survive.

    Business: North Indians became milkmen who sold milk to other Indians or Europeans. They reared cows, goat and buffaloes to get their milk. Others were shopkeepers who provided daily needs like food, cloth and laundry services.


    we need water to live , milk is also a kind of water which can help our bones become more stronger.

  6. Tan Tock Seng.Tan Tock Seng actually is a poor man,he keep on saving his money and became rich,but he did not forget the poor,so he help to build a hospital call Tan Tock Seng.

  7. Suez Canal was opened in 1869 to give an alternative route to the ships which were travelling from Europe to Asia.
    It was Ferdinand Le Lesseps, a French engineer, was the person who thought of the idea. After the opening of Suez Canal, Singapore’s merchants would be able to get their goods from Europe cheaper and faster.

    Due to the Industrial Revolution, Steamships would also need to call at the port to refuel and buy food.

    2)My elders often get sick so they always went to Tan Tock Seng Hospital(always!).The current Hospital is now bursting with technolegy.I can't believe that it had changed to a big hospital just over 100+ years!I think that Tan Tock seng Hospital should be the main hospital in Singapore!

    2) I think his contribution to Singapore is very important because he helped to bring straits produce like coffee, birds’ nests, spices and rice from the East Indies to Singapore and those helped to widen the variety of goods being traded between Singapore and other countries.

    2)They served as skilled labourers like carpenters, barbers and goldsmiths. I think their contributions are important to Singapore because we need barbers to cut our hair , we also need goldsmiths to make jewellery and we also need carpenters to make or repairs wooden objects.

    Trading: Europeans had the knowledge of trade and commerce. They setup companies, which had connections with Europe with their capital.

    Government: The European merchants gave their opinions and pointed out the weaknesses of the government here. Some of them volunteered to be unpaid judges. They helped to maintain law and order in this way.

    2.In 1844, Asians and Europeans contributed money to build a hospital. Tan Tock Seng contributed the most and thus the hospital was named after him.

    2)I thought he was important because he help to bring straits produce like coffee, birds’ nests, spices and rice from the East Indies to Singapore. Straits produce are the products that are grown in the East Indies. These Straits produce helped to widen the variety of goods being traded between Singapore and other countries.

  31. Munshi Abdullah. He is one of the famous Malay man who could speak many languages and he also wrote books about the early Singapore. Abdullah went to Singapore in 1819, and later worked as a master at Raffles Institution.

  32. Munshi Abdullah.He is working for Raffles as a young boy in Malacca and later help him in his Malay Studies was born in Malacca in 1797. He admired and greatly attached to Raffles. He could speak many language and he also wrote books about the early Singapore.He is a famous journalist.He teaches Raffles speak Malay. Abdullah went to Singapore, where he settle, in 1819, and later worked as a master at Raffles Institution.

    I thought he was important because he drew the town plan.So if he was not there Singapore will not be like this.
